John Kostoulias has officially stepped down from his role as President of the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizens’ Clubs of Melbourne and Victoria, citing serious health concerns.
This marks the second time in a relatively short period that Kostoulias has resigned from the Federation’s top position. His decision was confirmed in an official statement sent to Neos Kosmos following an emergency board meeting.
The announcement reads:
“An emergency meeting of the Board of the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizens’ Clubs of Melbourne and Victoria was held at the request of President John Kostoulias. This was the second such meeting in a week.
The topic for discussion:
Following medical advice, Kostoulias has been instructed to refrain from all social activities due to significant health issues. As such, he is stepping down from his duties as President and has asked the Board to respect his decision.
However, he will remain on the current Board until the next General Assembly, during which elections will be held to appoint a new Administrative Council.
In the interim, the Board will continue operating as is, with Mr Giannis Gaitanis stepping in as acting President.”
Kostoulias has long been a respected figure within the Greek Australian community, enjoying broad support from the majority of Federation members. Despite this, he has also faced occasional criticism from external sources.
The upcoming General Assembly and elections will determine the Federation’s next permanent leadership. In the meantime, Gaitanis will oversee its operations to ensure continuity of service and representation for the elderly Greek community in Victoria.
