A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit off the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

The strong quake struck 82 kilometres (51 miles) northeast of Crete’s capital Heraklion, at a depth of 68 kilometres, the USGS said.

Another 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Crete, Greece, in early May 2025. While the earthquake was felt in Crete and Rhodes, and a tsunami warning was issued, no significant damage or casualties were reported. The Greek seismologist Efthymis Lekkas stated that this earthquake was an isolated incident and not related to the earlier earthquake swarm in Santorini.
