Maria Sakkari has suffered a third straight Grand Slam first round loss, losing to French wildcard Elsa Jacquemot 6-3, 7(7)-6(4).
The former World No.3 has fallen to No.90 and received a favourable opening match against No.138 Jacquemot, but her struggles continued.
Sakkari suffering back-to-back breaks right out of the gate but managed to get one break back which didn’t end up helping her since she got broken again in the ninth game, dropping the opening set.
The second set looked much more promising as she bounced back to take a 5-2 lead but in stunning events, she failed to serve out for the set twice and missed out on two set points in two separate games.
It’s been three years of woeful Grand Slam performances for the Greek, as she has struggled to make it past the opening couple of rounds.
Wimbledon last year was her best run since 2022, winning her opening two matches before a heavy loss to Emma Raducanu in the third round.
Since then she has failed to win at a Major, retiring in the US Open first round and then losing her opener at the Australian Open in January.
