Lefteris Petrounias has once again written history in European gymnastics. On Saturday evening in Rimini, Italy, he was crowned European champion on the rings for the eighth time in his career, adding another chapter to his remarkable journey.
The Greek Olympic gold medallist delivered an outstanding routine in the final of the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships, scoring 14.866 points. He claimed first place, ahead of Italy’s Salvatore Maresca, who took silver with 14.800, and Turkey’s Adem Asil, who secured the bronze with 14.766.
The 33-year-old champion’s joy was evident when his score was revealed, celebrating with passion embraced by his coach, Dimitris Raftis.
A dominant force for over a decade
Petrounias continues to reign supreme in his favourite event, as this eighth European gold adds to those he previously won in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022. He also holds three World Championship titles (2015, 2017, 2018) and the 2016 Olympic gold medal from Rio.
His only “setbacks” at the European level were in 2019 and 2023, when he earned bronze medals.
This latest victory proves once again that he is not only one of the greatest athletes in the history of Greek sport but also one of the most successful ring specialists of all time worldwide.

Petrounias’ statement
Shortly after winning the gold, Petrounias spoke to the Greek national broadcaster ERT, visibly moved:
“I’m thrilled. It’s my eighth European gold medal, and to achieve that at this point in my career—at 33—is very emotional. I was consistent today, I gave it everything, and the reward came. This medal proves that hard work pays off, and that age is just a number when you have the will and dedication.”
He also dedicated the medal to his family and his team:
“This medal is for my family—my wife and children who support me every day—as well as my coach Dimitris Raftis and our entire team who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I thank everyone who believes in me.”
A legend’s road to Paris
With this victory, Petrounias sends a strong message ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, confirming that he remains at the highest level and will be a strong contender for yet another Olympic medal.
Greece continues to take pride in his performances, as Petrounias represents not just athletic excellence but also perseverance, passion, and humility.
