As of Sunday, 29 June, individuals applying for a new police-issued identity card in Greece are now required to present a Personal Number, following the implementation of new identification procedures by the Hellenic Police.
The Personal Number is part of Greece’s ongoing digital transformation strategy, aiming to streamline administrative services and replace older identification systems with a unified code for all citizens.
The only exception applies to those who have already initiated the process of obtaining a Personal Number but have not yet received it, provided the delay is not due to their own actions.
The Hellenic Police are advising applicants to consult the official website for up-to-date instructions and documentation requirements to avoid delays and ensure smoother service. Full details are available at: www.astynomia.gr/odigos-tou-politi/dikaiologitika/ekdosi-deltiou-taftotitas
New ID cards: How to issue your Personal Number
The Personal Number will be printed on the new ID cards (on the back side) and will also appear on the digital ID in the gov.gr wallet, serving as the citizen’s unique identifier in the digital world. Over time, it will be used across all public services that support this new functionality.
Initially, the Personal Number will mainly be used for transactions with the public sector. However, its use is expected to expand to the private sector, such as banks and insurance companies, to eliminate the need for multiple identification numbers.
The Personal Number is assigned through the new myInfo application on gov.gr.
Citizens can help shape their own number by selecting two of the three alphanumeric characters that will precede their Tax Identification Number (AFM).
The third alphanumeric character will be automatically generated by the system and will function as a check digit.
The Personal Number is made up of 12 characters, structured as follows:
- 3 alphanumeric characters (2 of which are chosen by the citizen)
- the citizen’s AΦM (Tax Identification Number)
- the automatically generated check digit
- To issue the Personal Number through the myInfo app, citizens need their Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile phone number listed in the National Communication Registry (ΕΜΕπ).
This ensures secure access to the app and protects personal data.
Steps to issue the Personal Number:
- Login to myInfo: Citizens access the app using their Taxisnet credentials
- Secure access with two-factor authentication: OTP (One-Time Password) will be used for secure access
- Review of records in government registries: Citizens can view their data as listed in official registries
- Confirmation or correction of data: Citizens can confirm or request corrections to inaccurate information
- Automatic registry synchronization and issuance: After confirmation or correction, records are automatically updated and the Personal Number is issued
Personal Number Now Also Available at Consulates
As of 24 June, all citizens can now obtain a Personal Number not only online via myInfo, but also in person at KEΠ (Citizens’ Service Centres) or Greek consular authorities abroad.
Like the myInfo process, citizens can confirm their personal details in person with an authorised official, who will check their data as stored in public registries. This ensures the accuracy and consistency of official records and enables the issuance of the Personal Number.
It is worth noting that this service is only available through specially authorised staff at each KEΠ or paid consular authority. On its first day of operation, nearly 770 citizens used the new service.
Citizens can turn to KEΠ or consular authorities in the following cases:
- If they do not have a certified mobile phone number registered with the National Communication Registry (ΕΜΕπ)
- If they wish to confirm data or issue a Personal Number for underage family members who are not listed in the same or related municipal record
- If they are acting on behalf of individuals under legal guardianship
- If they do not have Taxisnet credentials issued by the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance (ΓΓΠΣΨΔ)
According to the Ministry of Digital Governance, over 500,000 citizens have already been issued a Personal Number. Through the myInfo data verification process, 128,900 cases have been identified where discrepancies existed between at least two public registries. These are now being automatically corrected. Additionally, 31,250 new ID cards have already been issued with the Personal Number printed on them.
