Greece has felt the after-effects of massive wildfires in western coastal Smyrna with smoke stretching into the skies above many of its islands.
The wildfires scorched several areas of Turkey on Sunday evening, fuelled by near-gale force winds, with reports saying thousands of firefighters have been dispatched to fight the blazes.
The coastal port city of Izmir was surrounded by the flames and smoke.
Smoke and the smell of burned wood, in fact, extended as far west as the Dodecanese Island of Patmos, with it also visible before dusk on many of Greece’s eastern Aegean islands.

Media reports stated Patmos was blanketed by smoke in the afternoon, with the atmosphere described as of poor quality.
Greek civil defence and fire brigade officials, meanwhile, were on high alert throughout the country due to high temperatures, arid conditions and gusty winds – an ideal “mix” for destructive wildfires.
