A Greek lawyer has been arrested by authorities in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus for reportedly filming military sites, with the man facing allegations of espionage.

The lawyer was detained last Friday while allegedly recording military barracks and installations with his mobile phone, according to Kathimerini Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriot media published photos of the man in handcuffs on Sunday afternoon.

The lawyer has reportedly denied the allegations of espionage, claiming the photos were taken for “souvenir purposes”.

However, authorities have ordered his detention for four days. The charges against him carry a potential prison sentence of up to five years.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident and stated it is coordinating with Cypriot authorities on how to handle the matter.
