It was a mixed bag for the Greek Australian sides in the North-West group over the weekend, with only Yarraville’s Doxa tasting the sweet thrill of victory.
State League 1 – North-West
Westvale Olympic, sitting fourth in the table, battled to a goalless draw away at Banyule City. The 0-0 result left both sides frustrated, with neither able to break the deadlock. This Saturday, Westvale will host Clifton Hill in a Greek Australian derby brimming with blue-and-white passion.
Clifton Hill also had to settle for a point, fighting out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Ballarat City. The “Men from the Hill” showed plenty of grit but couldn’t nick all three points.
Western Suburbs had a day to forget, slumping to a heavy 0-3 home defeat against table-toppers Keilor Park. They’ll look to bounce back when they face Yarraville in another Greek Australian derby this weekend.
Doxa Yarraville, meanwhile, are heading into that clash with a spring in their step after a hard-fought 2-1 away win over Upfield. The result has boosted morale at the club as they gear up for a challenging run-in.
State League 1 – South-East
Malvern City are looking unstoppable at the top of the South-East group. The Greek Australian side clinched a massive 3-1 victory in their blockbuster derby against second-placed Bayside Argonauts, cementing their spot at the summit. This Saturday, Malvern face a tricky trip to Collingwood City, while the Argonauts head to Freeway Reserve to take on Brandon Park.
South Springvale’s Aris hit another bump in the road, managing only a 3-3 draw against Brandon Park despite throwing everything at them. The result was a spectacle for the neutrals but left Aris’ loyal supporters gutted, as they missed a chance to close the gap on the leaders. This weekend, they’ll travel to face Gippsland United.
State League 2 – North-West
Table-toppers Altona East Phoenix kept their cool, battling to a 1-1 draw against Dallas City. The “Dikefalos” remain in pole position and will look to keep their promotion push on track when they face Whittlesea Ranges away on Friday.
Mill Park put up a valiant fight but fell 4-2 away at Strathmore. The “Pigeons” showed plenty of heart but couldn’t match their hosts’ quality. This Saturday, they’ll face a daunting trip to Lalor United, one of the division’s toughest venues.
State League 2 – South-East
Chisholm United grafted hard but had to settle for a 1-1 draw away at Skye United. The Oakleigh-based side pushed for the win but were held by their hosts’ quality. This Friday, they’ll host Bentleigh United Cobras in another Greek Australian derby.
The Cobras, however, are heading into that clash with their tails between their legs after a 2-1 home defeat to St Kilda. The loss has left them languishing in 10th, dangerously close to the drop zone.
State League 3 – South-East
Waverley Wanderers were in scintillating form, smashing six goals past Sandringham in a 6-1 rout. The “Yellow and Black” are breathing down the necks of the leaders and will fancy their chances when they host Middle Park this Saturday.
State League 4 – East
East Kew’s Olympiakos kept their promotion hopes alive with a gritty 1-0 home win over Docklands Athletic. This Saturday, they’ll face a stern test away at third-placed Albert Park.
State League 4 – North
Keon Park’s AEK endured a painful 2-0 home defeat to Watsonia Heights. They’ll look to regroup when they host Fawkner on Friday.
West Preston were in top form, storming to a 5-2 away win over Moonee Valley Knights. The “Greens” will aim to keep the momentum going when they face Thornbury Athletic at home on Saturday.
Darebin United’s Apollon edged out Heidelberg Stars 1-0, keeping their mid-table position secure. This Saturday, they’ll travel to Watsonia Heights for another tough away day.
