Greece’s men’s national water polo team has been beaten in another decisive match—this time against Spain, 11–9 on penalties, in the semi-final of the World Championship in Singapore.

Greece played four minutes a man down in the second period due to a red card (without substitution) issued to Chalyvopoulos, and found themselves behind 6–2. Yet they held the Iberians scoreless for 19 minutes, rallied to take a 7–6 lead, and came within reach of a dramatic place in the final.

But Munárriz equalised in the final second of regulation (7–7), and the Greek team appeared to mentally collapse, missing the opportunity to reach a World Championship final for only the second time in its history.

Thodoris Vlachos’ players must now regroup and fight for the bronze medal on Thursday, 24 July (7:35pm AEST), against the loser of the Serbia–Hungary match.
