Maria Sakkari has won her opening match in Washington at the Citi Open with a straight sets victory over Katie Boulter 6-3, 6-4.
It was a strong performance from the Greek who won 81 per cent of her first serves. She also won four of her seven break points and held back three.
This was just the second time the two have met, with Boulter winning their first match back in 2018.
Sakkari is coming off a mixed grass-court season. She reached the second round at Wimbledon, defeating Anna Blinkova before falling 6-3, 6-1 to Elena Rybakina, and exiting early at both Bad Homburg and Berlin.
