A proposal to hold a new friendly match between the Greek national team and the Socceroos in Melbourne was reportedly submitted by the Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos during his visit to Greece.
As announced by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO), its president, Makis Gagatsis, met with the Secretary General of Sports, George Mavrotas, and Dimopoulos.
In a Facebook post, the EPO pointed out that “they discussed sports policy issues and potential cooperation between the two countries” and that Dimopoulos expressed the Australian government’s desire to host a friendly match in Melbourne “within the next two years” to give Greek Australians the opportunity to watch the Greek team up close “as it has happened in the past.”

The EPO said the Greek side were interested in this proposal but Gagatsis is reserved on choosing a date yet due to the team’s obligations.
Greece and Australia last played in friendly back in 2016, when Greece won 2-1 and Australia was coached by Ange Postecoglou.
Neos Kosmos has contacted the office of Dimopoulos for comment.
