Maria Sakkari is through to the quarter-finals at the Citi Open after a shock straight sets win over second seed Emma Navarro 7-5, 7(7)-6(1).

It was a fairly even matchup with the Greek winning the only break of the match in the final game of the first set.

It was her service game that gave her the edge, hitting seven aces to one while serving at 84 per cent on her first serve.

Home country hopeful World No. 11 Navarro though also served at 84 per cent on her first.

But it was Sakkari who seems to be playing the conditions better, with the fast and high bouncing, hitting big forehands at shoulder level to impose her physicality.

The 2023 DC finalist will next face the winner of tomorrow’s Emma Raducanu – Naomi Oaska matchup.
