VCE students from the Greek Community of Melbourne schools, together with St John’s College, engaged in an education excursion to the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre that engrossed them in the area’s history.
The visit took place on Sunday 28 July, and was organised in line with the Migration topic currently being studied by Year 11 and 12 VCE Modern Greek students.
Bonegilla has lots of history in relation to migration, with thousands of Greeks having arrived there when coming to Australia.
The visit presented the students a chance to reflect on migration history, particularly in relation to the journeys and struggles of the various members of the Greek diaspora.
The initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the Greek Community of Melbourne Schools and St John’s College, aimed at boosting student engagement and ensuring well-rounded preparation for VCE success.
“It was an unforgettable day, one that highlighted the power of historical memory, the beauty of collaboration, and the vibrant spirit of the Greek school,” said Maria Bakalidou, Principal of the Greek Community of Melbourne Schools.
