The Greek Women of the Northern Suburbs ‘Anemones’ came together on Sunday, 27 July to celebrate a uniquely Australian tradition, Christmas in July. The gathering brought festive cheer to Melbourne’s winter and rekindled fond memories of Christmases past for the women, many of whom were born in Greece and associate the holiday with cold weather, warm dishes, and close-knit community spirit.

With Christmas decorations adorning the venue and classic holiday songs playing in the background, the atmosphere was one of joy, reflection, and shared tradition.

In her welcome speech, President Nola Radiotis reminded attendees that “the true meaning of Christmas can be celebrated at any time of the year.”

While acknowledging that the birth of Christ is marked on 25 December, she emphasised the importance of carrying the message of “love, joy, and hope” throughout the year.

“This celebration today amongst friends is a way of sharing the Christmas spirit and enjoying each other’s company,” she added.

Guests enjoyed a festive buffet featuring traditional Christmas fare, and took part in a cultural sharing session where they recounted customs from their hometowns across Greece, from Northern regions to the Peloponnese and the islands. Stories included unique local dishes and community practices that made Christmas special in each village.

The afternoon concluded with Christmas-themed trivia, plenty of tea and coffee, laughter, and photographs to mark the occasion.
