Historian Florence Livery will spearhead an evening full of memories and history hosted at the Greek Centre, delving into the unknown stories of the Castellorizian Ladies’ Society that ran from 1961 to 1978.
The lecture titled “Stardust: The Golden Years of the Castellorizian Ladies Society, Melbourne (1961–1978)” is part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars Program and will be held on Thursday 18 September at 7pm.
The event heralds a return to creative, yet demanding, times when a group of pioneering women joined forced to create one of the first independent women’s clubs within the Greek-Australian community.

Livery, historian and archivist of the Kastellorizian Association of Victoria (KAV), will highlight unknown aspects of the journey of the *Castellorizian Ladies Society, which served as a beacon of social cohesion, solidarity and cultural expression for the women of the Kastellorizian community.
With reference to the challenges faced by the members, their calendar full of events and charitable activities, and the sense of dignity and joy they conveyed in each of their initiatives, the lecture promises to illuminate some of the lesser-told, but defining stories of the Greek women’s movement in Melbourne.
Participation is free and open to all, while the location of the seminar – the Greek Centre – is not only a historical landmark, but also the ideal setting for a journey back in time.
*The spelling of Castellorizian with a C was the one officially used by the association at the time of its founding.
