Greece has dominated as one of the top performing nations in the 2025 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, winning four medals to finish as the second-best country behind only the United Kingdom.
The country’s young rowers performed exceedingly well as the team secured two gold medals, one silver and one bronze, while also participating in another final and recording a sixth place finish.
Their display saw them rank above superpower nations like Germany, USA, Romania and Italy.
Varvara Lykomitrou won the gold medal in the Women’s Singles Sculls final with a fantastic race, wherein she overtook her Spanish opponent after the 1,300 metre mark to seize first place.
It marked her third gold of the year after those at the European Junior and Junior Sculls Championships in Poland and the World U23 Championships in doubles with Dimitra Kontou.
A gold medal was also won by Paschalina Mouratidou and Eleni Diavati in the final of the Women’s Double Sculls with a unique race by the Greek crew that took the lead from start to finish in a time of 7:39.77, finishing ahead of the UK (7:44.67) and Germany (7:48.41).
For Diavati, it was her second gold this year after winning (along with Dara) at the European Championships, while Mouratidou had won silver at the European Championships in the quadruple.
Konstantinos Giannoulis and Iasonas Mouselimis won silver for Greece at the Men’s Doubles Sculls, having previously won silver at the World Championship and a gold at the European Championships earlier this year.
The Greek crew after an excellent race fell 2nd at the finish with 6:46.83 behind Ireland (6:39.57) and well ahead of Germany (6:57.37).
Andreas Bourkas-Alexandros Chatziavgoustidis won the bronze medal in the final of the Men’s pair (doubles) event with a time of 7:08.84.
It represents some good progress for the duo who had finished in sixth at the European Championship in May.
The Greek team in the Quadruple Sculls did well as they placed sixth in the final with a time of 7:10.49.
The team, which comprised of Nefeli Ntara, Eleni Paparrizou, Panagiota Kalaitzi and Freideriki Amalia Ntani, will no doubt take a lot from the experience of being in a World Championship final.
