West Adelaide Hellas honoured one of its most celebrated figures — Neil McGachey, the captain who led the club to its historic 1978 national championship triumph on Saturday August 9.

Chairman and President John Tsianos shared his on McGachey’s lasting influence.

“Tonight is about commemorating someone that has given so much to our club. And even though he is not Greek, he definitely identifies as one of us,” Tsianos told Neos Kosmos.

“He has given me unwavering support since I entered the presidency a few years ago, and tonight is just a small token to give back to him.”

The club marked this significant occasion with the official unveiling of a new grandstand at Kilburn Sportsplex, a tribute to McGachey’s contribution to the club and its legacy in Australian football. The ceremony paid respect to a player whose leadership helped propel West Adelaide to national prominence.

Neil McGachey himself was visibly moved by the tribute.

“Efharisto to all the Greek community for the greatest surprise of my life,” McGachey told Neos Kosmos.

“I’m sure this is just the first of many people with long-standing connections to the club whose names will be across the stadium somewhere. We can all celebrate the past and look forward to the future.”

Steve Georganas the Member for Adelaide was also there as a supporter of Greek-Australian football and culture. Georganas praised the club for recognising McGachey’s immense service to the game and to Hellas.

“It’s great to see Neil McGachey honoured — one of our heroes of Hellas and the Hellas days,” Georganas told Neos Kosmos.

“He’s gone through the whole cycle of the club — from being a magnificent player to coaching and administration. I feel really pleased that they named the grandstand after Neil and recognised it with tonight’s event.”

McGachey was touched by the honour and thanked the club, reflecting on his journey with Hellas and the many friendships forged over the years. In true McGachey fashion, he shared a few light-hearted stories from his playing days, drawing laughter from the crowd. He spoke candidly about what inspired him throughout his career — from the pride of wearing the Hellas jersey to the deep respect he developed for the club’s culture and community. “This club gave me everything,” he said. “It’s more than football — it’s family.”

Following the unveiling, West Adelaide took to the field against Adelaide Olympic, a match that transcended the usual competition. This was not merely a league fixture; it was an expression of the proud Hellenic heritage shared by both clubs. The stands were filled with passionate supporters, not only there to cheer on the current team but also to honour a true club legend whose name is forever etched in the history of West Adelaide Hellas.

The match finished with a fitting result — a West Adelaide victory — providing the perfect end to a memorable day.

The celebrations continued into the evening with Taverna Night. Guests were treated to live Greek music, traditional cuisine, and drinks, creating a festive and warm atmosphere.

It was a night that brought together families, fans, and players alike, all united in the celebration of McGachey’s legacy and the enduring spirit of the West Adelaide Hellas community. The evening was a perfect fusion of football and Greek tradition, with dancing, storytelling, and shared memories that will surely remain in the hearts of those who were present.
