The Melbourne Philosophical Café is set to tackle one of the biggest works of ancient Greek thought in their upcoming meeting: Plato’s Republic.
The group will delve into the famous work in their next monthly meeting on 2 September, 3.30pm, at the Great Hall of the Pallakoniki Brotherhood in Brunswick.
The event will consist of two parts, the first being a lecture as delivered by Professor Matthew J. Sharpe from the Department of Philosophy at the Australian Catholic University.
Professor Sharpe will present a general outline of the work, detailing its key philosophical and political positions, as well as its enduring value as a tool for thought and study.
Following his talk, the event will break into an open discussion that explores various questions like:
– How does the “Republic” converse with modern man?
– Which ideas of Plato remain relevant?
– How does he challenge us to think about the future in our current world?
The group noted in their announcement that:
“Our goal is an academic, yet accessible discussion, with findings that will enrich our local dialogue and the Greek press of Melbourne.”
The two parts of the event will be separated by a short break where coffee, tea, and pastries will be on offer as well as some friendly chat right before the open discussion.
