Maria Sakkari has won her first match at the US Open since 2022 after fending off Tatjana Maria in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
The Greek, ranked No. 64, has made a strong start to her US Open campaign with a strong performance to defeat the German world No. 42 in just 85 minutes.
Sakkari served at 67 per cent and won half of the break points she earned (5/10).
She hit 37 winners and was dominant at the net, converting 16 of 19 points when advancing forward.
After dropping serve in the opening game, she broke twice to take a 3-1 lead and closed out the first set with ease.
In the second, she built a 4-1 advantage, before Maria drew back briefly, then earned another break and sealed the win on serve.
Sakkari will next face Hungarian Anna Bondar in the second round.
