Authorities are reporting the arrest of 48 individuals on Crete, including an active-duty officer, two military servicemen and an air force NCO, in line with an investigation into a criminal organisation.

A major police operation took place on Crete from the early hours of Sunday morning local time, with numerous individuals arrested, including business people, an active-duty officer, two army officers and an air force officer.

The raid was overseen by eight prosecutors and follows a lengthy investigation into a crime gang trafficking drugs and weapons, as well as engaging in extortion.

Most arrests were made in the cities of Chania and Rethymno.

According to police, searches have so far turned up cannabis and cocaine, along with weapons, including assault rifles.

Several businesses were raided during the operation, such as hotels and beach bars that authorities claim are being used to launder proceeds from criminal activities.

The entire operation is being coordinated by the police command in Chania.
