The Municipality of Kalymnos has publicly thanked Greek Australian businessman John Halikos for his ongoing and transformative support to his birthplace and the nearby islands of Pserimos and Telendos.
With deep emotion and gratitude, Mayor of Kalymnos John Mastrokoukos expressed appreciation for Halikos’ “unceasing, substantial and multi-faceted contribution,” which has provided critical lifelines to some of Greece’s most remote communities.
“In a time when the state often struggles to meet the needs of our most distant regions, the actions of our compatriot, John Halikos, stand as a shining example of genuine love for the homeland,” the mayor said.
Among Halikos’ most recent initiatives is the donation of all necessary school supplies for students in Pserimos and Telendos, alongside a monthly financial allowance of €300 per child for the entire school year. According to Mastrokoukos, this “goes beyond philanthropy” and represents a true act of social responsibility, keeping educational life and hope alive in Greece’s border islands.

He has also covered accommodation for the teacher at Pserimos’ single-class primary school, which reopened this year after 16 years of closure.
This, the mayor stressed, shows that Halikos’ commitment “is not limited to financial contributions, but reaches the very heart of social cohesion and the sustainability of our islands.”
Halikos, who is based in Darwin, Northern Territory, has long been recognised as one of Kalymnos’ great benefactors. His support extends far beyond education, having backed health services, transport, and everyday needs.
In 2021, he fully funded the construction of the “Halikio” building at Kalymnos Hospital – a state-of-the-art facility praised as a “jewel” for the local health system. His contributions have also included vital hospital infrastructure such as oxygen supply units, with locals saying his generosity has left a permanent mark on the island.
“John Halikos never forgets his roots. Through selfless, consistent actions, he has proven that love for one’s homeland is not words but a way of life,” said Mastrokoukos.
On behalf of all Kalymnians, the mayor extended “heartfelt thanks, not only for what he has already offered, but also for what he symbolises: the belief that our small islands can have a future – one built on solidarity, vision and action.”
