The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Hieromonk Arsenios Papapanagiotou on Sunday, 21 September.
Born in Melbourne in 1971 as Markos Papapanagiotou, the late Fr Arsenios was the son of Michael and Maria, who migrated to Australia from Keratsini in Attica.
After many years within the Adelaide schism, Fr Arsenios demonstrated what the Archdiocese described as “exemplary repentance” and returned to the canonical Church, inspired by the love and guidance of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
In August this year, he was ordained Deacon on 9 August and Priest on 15 August by Archbishop Makarios. Despite battling a serious illness, he departed this life “in repentance, spiritual joy and inner fulfilment,” as the Archdiocese noted, having been received into the fullness of the canonical Orthodox Church.
The Funeral Service (Exodios) will be held at the Church of Saint Spyridon in Clayton, Melbourne. The date will be announced shortly by the Archdiocese.
