The legacy of George Devine Treloar continues onto Perth with the Western Australia capital the latest city to host a presentation of the new book on Treloar which delves into his work while in Greece.

The presentation of the book ‘Genocide to Regeneration: the photographs of George Devine Treloar’, co-authored by Professor David Treloar and Dr Panayiotis Diamadis, will take centre stage on Wednesday 1 October, 7pm, at the Archdiocese Function Centre in Dianella.

The event, organised by the Hellenic Community of WA and the Pontian Brotherhood of WA, will see the two authors in attendance as they elaborate on the near 200 photos, personal extracts of League of Nations reports and maps that make up the book.

Treloar served as League of Nations Commissioner for Refugees in northern Greece between October 1922 and April 1924, during which he aided thousands of Greek, Armenian and Assyrian refugees fleeing from genocide in Asia Minor.

The humanitarian documented his work significantly, which has served as the basis of the book.

Nearly all of the Treloar photographs have never been published before.

The photos themselves are mostly spontaneous, unposed images of the refugees themselves, such as crowded aboard boats, arriving, queuing for rations, building rough accommodation, ploughing, living in tents, spinning, weaving, preparing meals, rebuilding lives.
