Accomplished musician, teacher and artist Betty Exintaris OAM has been elected as the new president of the Federation of Greek Elderly Citizens Clubs of Victoria, following months of turmoil.
Ms Exintaris, with her long and active involvement in the Greek community, has made significant contributions to both culture and the strengthening of Melbourne’s Greek organisations. Her election to the leadership of the Federation is expected to bring stability, renewal, and a restoration of the organisation’s standing, which in recent times has faced internal upheavals.
In a statement to Neos Kosmos, the new president said:
“During a recent assembly attended by fifty members from various affiliated clubs, a vote was held to elect a new President of the Federation. Following a unanimous decision, I was elected President.
At the same time, a new committee was formed, the members of which will be officially announced in due course.

Under the new leadership, the Federation reaffirms its commitment to fully support all members, as well as to implement meaningful and positive reforms aimed at strengthening its operations and enhancing its public image.
It is recognised that there is significant work to be completed. With responsibility, consistency, and a spirit of cooperation, we will continue to work towards achieving our common goals.”
However, the assembly did not proceed without tension. According to sources, shortly before tye meeting began, an incident occurred outside the venue, resulting in the police being called, once again.
The confrontation is said to have broken out between the Federation’s former president, John Kostoulias, and member Kostas Alaveras, with the latter reportedly stating that he intends to take legal action.
Despite the incident, the proceedings concluded smoothly with participation from representatives of numerous clubs. The new president has expressed her determination to reunite the Federation and focus on its core mission: supporting the elderly and preserving Greek tradition and cohesion among younger generations.
Neos Kosmos continues to investigate the related allegations and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
