Athenians and visitors to the city can now enjoy a rare and breathtaking view of the Acropolis, as the metal scaffolding on the western side of the Parthenon has recently been removed. This moment comes after roughly 15 years of continuous conservation and restoration work.
The removal of the scaffolding, completed on 30 September, allows visitors to admire the monument’s “pristine” appearance, which had been hidden from view for more than a decade. This new perspective of the Parthenon can be appreciated from the side of the Herodeion, offering a unique view of the iconic temple.
Despite the striking reveal, this view is likely to be temporary.
Conservation and restoration work is expected to continue in the future, using smaller, more flexible structures that won’t cover the entire side of the monument, allowing visitors to enjoy, at least partially, the enduring architectural beauty of the Parthenon.
The removal of the scaffolding marks an important milestone in the long-term preservation of the Acropolis and provides a rare opportunity for everyone to see the Parthenon as they never have before.
According to the Acropolis Monuments Conservation Service, on 30 September the scaffolding on the western side of the Parthenon—above the Herodeion—was taken down, completing another significant stage in the monument’s decades-long restoration project.
