It was a winning debut for the mighty Alexander in the new national football championship, which kicked off this weekend. The home side defeated Marconi 1–0, thanks to a superb goal from Antonis Theodoropoulos in the 58th minute.
The Greek Australian striker, along with his namesake teammate Antonis Lesiotis, were the driving forces behind coach John Anastasiadis’ side and key to the team’s impressive victory.
Lesiotis once again dominated in midfield for this year’s NPL champions, while Theodoropoulos proved a constant threat to the visitors’ defence.
Coach Anastasiadis was delighted at the final whistle, having seen his team start the new season on a high despite significant squad rotation. A sign of Alexander’s refreshed look on the pitch was that two of its top players, Bul Juach and Japan’s Asahi Yokokawa, came on as substitutes midway through the second half.
The Greek Australian club now has around five days to prepare for the second round of the new national championship, when they will face Wollongong Wolves away.
The “Wolves” also began their campaign with a win, overcoming South Hobart 3–1—a result that underlines the quality of the New South Wales side.
