Archbishop Makarios of Australia will represent the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the coming Third International Scientific Conference on Bioethics in Rethymno, Crete, which will see numerous academics and church officials discuss its theme: Euthanasia.

Archbishop Makarios, the chair of the Organizing Committee and President of the Synodal Committee on Bioethics of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, will be at the event running from 24-26 October.

The Conference will be hosted by Metropolitan Prodromos of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, and will take place at the “Theomitor” Center for Social and Cultural Ministry of the Holy Metropolis of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, as well as at the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of the Holy Cross of Vosakos, Mylopotamos.

The opening day will serve as an introduction into the three-day event with Archbishop Makarios to close out the first day with a keynote address titled “Euthanasia as an Affirmation of Death and a Denial of the Resurrection, or the Temptation of Calypso”.

The second day will be divided into three sessions titled “Euthanasia: Contrasts and Correlations”, “Euthanasia: Philosophical and Anthropological Explorations” and “Euthanasia: Experiences, Dilemmas, and Challenges”.

Numerous academics and church officials will speak across the sessions, discussing their thoughts and insights into the subject matter.

The third day will open with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Catholicon of the Monastery, as officiated by Archbishop Makarios, before some conclusions and the official closing of the conference.

The whole event will finish with a lunch at the Monastery refectory to bring an end to its full program.
