The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW (GOCNSW) hosted a professional learning event for educators of its Afternoon and Saturday School Greek Language Program on Monday at its Lakemba headquarters.

Visiting scholar Dr Ifigeneia Dosi, Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Department of Greek Philology, Democritus University of Thrace, led an engaging workshop on advancing Greek heritage language education and enhancing student engagement.

The professional learning event was held in collaboration with Dr Patricia Koromvokis, Lecturer in Global Cultures and Languages at Macquarie University.

Dr Dosi guided participants through practical, interactive methods to support bilingual and multilingual learners, linking language learning to identity and inclusion.

Through activities listed as Word-Image Match, Story Cards, Running Dictation, and Color-Coded Bilingual Passages, she demonstrated how to make language learning dynamic and accessible.

“Colour-coding allows students to visually separate information, making texts easier to understand and supporting comprehension for bilingual learners,”
explained Dr Dosi.

Educators responded positively, particularly to the Running Dictation exercise, describing it as a fun and effective way to energise students and reinforce learning with practical tools through meaningful engagement.

As part of the ongoing initiative, Dr Dosi and Dr Koromvokis will visit the Saturday Language School at Clemton Park on Saturday, 18 October at 9.30am, to lead an open forum for parents and the broader community, highlighting the benefits of maintaining and speaking Greek at home.

The open forum event has been organised in collaboration with the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney, with Consul General Georgios Skemperis also to feature as a guest speaker.
