Team Greece kicked off their 2025 All Nations Cup campaign with a close 1-0 loss to Burundi at Knox City FC.

With scores tied at 0-0 at the main interval, Burundi scored early in the second half to take the lead from a 30-metre shot.

Team Greece then took total control of the game and completely dominated possession but were not able to score after numerous clear-cut opportunities went begging.

Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) Board Member Michael Karamitos had this to say following the conclusion of the game.

“Disappointing way to end the first game with a loss however very proud of the way the boys took total control once headed and look forward to bouncing back with a win next week against Serbia,” he said in a statement sent to Neos Kosmos.

GCM President Bill Papastergiadis was encouraged by the performance despite the loss.

“Team Greece may not have gotten the result we so desired however the effort and determination cannot be questioned,” Papastergiadis said.

“We totally controlled the second half and created numerous opportunities, however it wasn’t meant to be.

“We now look forward to our next opponent Serbia, next Sunday in a must win match”.
