More than 100 people gathered at the Australian Hellenic Memorial on Saturday, 18 October, for the 2025 Schools Competition Awards Ceremony, an initiative designed to help students learn about Greece’s role in the Second World War and the significance behind the memorial itself.
In a warm and joyful atmosphere, primary and secondary school students from across Victoria received recognition for their work exploring the sacrifices and bravery of those who fought in the war.
The event was supported by Maria Triantafillou from the Greek Consulate of Melbourne, Acting Education Coordinator, who encouraged the students’ participation and commended their engagement with Greek and Australian wartime history.
“The goal of the competition,” organisers said, “is for students to learn about the history of World War II in Greece and to understand why the Memorial was created, so that the contribution and sacrifice of all the brave soldiers are never forgotten.”
The President of the Australian Hellenic Memorial Foundation, Steve Kyritsis OAM, expressed his delight at the event’s success and confirmed that the competition will return next year.
“I’m pleased to announce that the Schools Competition will continue in 2026,” Kyritsis told Neos Kosmos.
“We look forward to seeing many wonderful entries once again.”
