For the first time in Australia, an intensive online summer training program is being organised for teachers of the Greek diaspora who teach Greek as a second or foreign language. The program will take place from 12–22 January 2026, during the afternoon hours.

The initiative is being implemented by the Centre for Training and Lifelong Learning of the University of Western Macedonia, with the aim of strengthening and supporting educators who keep the Greek language and culture alive across the diaspora.

The program’s Scientific Director is Professor Eleni Griva, Professor of Applied Linguistics and Vice-Rector of the University of Western Macedonia. The Academic Coordinator for Sydney is Dr Patricia Koromvokis, Lecturer in International Cultures and Languages at the School of International Studies and Head of the Greek Language Examination Centre at Macquarie University. In Melbourne, the role of Academic Advisor is undertaken by Maria Bakalidou, Director of the Greek Community of Melbourne Schools.

Participants will receive training in:

  • Contemporary approaches to teaching Greek as a second or foreign language, with emphasis on oral and written communication skills and intercultural competence.
  • Design and production of teaching materials.
  • Use of digital tools and Artificial Intelligence in language education.
  • Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a 50-hour specialised training certificate (2 ECTS) along with a Europass supplement outlining the specific skills acquired.

This initiative represents a valuable opportunity for educators of the Greek diaspora to deepen their expertise, exchange experiences, and develop new tools for teaching Greek in multicultural settings.
