A special 1821 commemorative bottle for the award-winning Ladi Biosas Limited Edition olive oil is on display at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne.

The design of the special ceramic blue bottle which draws on themes of the Greek Revolution is the work of Greek ceramist George Vavatsis and Greek artist Takis Katsoulidis.

The Ladi Biosas range has won numerous design awards in the past for its Doric-style bottles.

William Dachris of Grecian Purveyor, which supplies the Ladi Biosas 821 Edition in Australia, said the colours on the commemorative edition represented the traditional colours of the Greek flag.

“The nine stripes of the flag symbolise the nine syllables in Greek of the famous motto of the 1821 revolution: “Freedom or Death” (E-le-fthe-ri-a-i-Tha-na-tos)” said Mr Dachris.The famous motto appears on each side of the bottle.

On the front of the bottle, Mr Dachris noted three additional references to Greece’s 200th anniversary:
♦ An olive wreath representing Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of Victory, crowning the heroes of 1821;
♦ The helmet of Theodoros Kolokotronis, the Greek general who was known as the “Geros tou Moria”; and
♦ The church of Agioi Apostoloi in Kalamata where the Greek Revolution was launched in 1821.

Mr Dachris said the award-winning oil is derived from the regal/ king variety of Koroneiki olives grown from trees in a single estate that are 600m above sea level growing amidst junipers, citruses and arbutus trees.
