Australia’s Jelena Dokic won the Singles title in Vogue Athens Open 2009 by beating Lena Daniilidou 6-2,6-1, her first tournament victory in 2009.

Dokic ruled the match from the beginning and broke Lena’s serve three times, eventually winning the first set 6-2. Daniilidou saved five set points, but not the sixth one.

The second set started in similar fashion. When Dokic led by 3-1, Daniilidou requested a medical time-out for a problem in her left calf.

Upon resumption of the match, Daniilidou saved five break points, but was unable to hold her serve.

Dokic had a comfortable 6-1 win in the second.

Dokic regarded the tournament as “fantastic”. She said about the match: “I had to work hard on my tactics, as Lena has the technique to cover the whole court. I was focused on my moves from the first moment, not forgetting that Lena is a former top-15 player and has quality on her game”.

Daniilidou, visibly emotional, congratulated Dokic for her win and thanked the people who “all week long were by my side. This gives me the courage and the strength to continue my career” she said while the spectators were cheering for her one more time.

However Daniildou gained some comfort from the fact that she and her doubles partner  Jasmin Woehr won the doubles final against  Bacsinszky (Switzerland) and Garbin (Italy) 6-2, 5-7,
[10-4].

In the singles semi-final, the 225-ranked Danilidou earned a hard-fought victory against her Italian opponent Maria-Elena Camerin, winning the match in straight sets 7-6, 7-6 with both sets going into tie-breakers.

Camerin, ranked 86 in the world was expected to have defeated Danilidou after the Greek needed some 2 hours 44 minutes in her quarter final against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova.

Dokic, who enjoyed a career high world ranking of 4 in 2002, beat Slovak Kristina Kucova in the first semi final on Saturday.

Dokic won in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) to progress to the final
