Residents on Rhodes were left without electricity as a fire, which broke out at noon on Sunday, swept through the island.

The fire started between the villages of Soroni and Tholou, and blazed out of control around the region causing serious damage.

The fire is in progress in the area of Kalamonas as firefighting forces battle with the blaze. The Valley of Butterflies, a tourist attraction on the western side of the island, has been evacuated along with the Kalamonas military camp. Residents of Maritsa and Kalythia also were asked to evacuate their villages by 3.30am Monday.

Forty firefighters, aided by army reserves and volunteers, continued to battle with the blaze overnight as 18 trucks were called into the area.

A Beriev 200 jet and three helicopters aided in efforts, whereas additional help is coming from Crete.

Achaia

Meanwhile, another fire in Zeria, Aegialia, in the Achaia region of the Peloponnese was brought under control on Sunday.

The fire is still in progress, however, with five firefighting aircraft, seven water-dropping helicopters, 77 fire engines with a 294-member crew and seven teams of firefighters on foot assisting in the operation.
