In his first home match before a packed Celtic Park, Ange Postecoglou gave fans something to crow about after his team beat Czech side Jablonec 3-0 (7-2 on aggregate) in a Europa League play-off encounter last night.

Last month, the Scottish giants were bundled out of the UEFA Champions League by Midtjylland and lost their first match of Scottish Premiership season (2-1 to Hearts) on 1 August. Doubts over Mr Postecoglou’s appointment began to surface.

This week, things took a decidedly sweeter turn for the former Socceroos coach as his team thrashed Dundee 6-0 on Monday. The result was further sweetened when their historic Glasgow rivals, Rangers FC, lost to Malmo and bowed out out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Last night, Mr Postecoglou’s team again turned on the style before a sold-out stadium and gave the doubters something more to cheer about than their return to the ground after an 17-month absence due to COVID-19.

Mr Postecoglou was buoyed by his team’s attacking brand of football and the performance not only of his new signings but also of players he head inherited from Neil Lennon, Celtic’s previous manager.

“It was brilliant. They didn’t under-sell it to me and they over-delivered. It was brilliant,” Mr Postacoglou said after his first home match with Celtic.

“For me, that’s what football is all about. It’s great to have success and to win, but to have these kinds of experiences is why I fell in love with the game in the first place.

“It was great to be part of it and I think they played their part. The players are in the middle of a pretty heavy schedule and at times when we looked like maybe we were running on empty, they found the edge and the crowd noise was incredible.”

Mr Postecoglou’s signings Israeli Liel Abada and Japanese Fuhurashi Kyogo at the front proved particularly effective against both Dundee and against Jablonec. A vastly improved performance by Lennon signing Ryan Christie was also an encouraging sign that the new manager’s methods are being adopted by the players who preceded his arrival.

The next Europa League opponent is in a play-off against Dutch team AZ Alkmaar.
