Greece has just completed a 40-km fence on its border with Turkey following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

The country’s authorities have also installed a new surveillance systemin an attempt to prevent potential asylum seekers from trying to flee into Europe.

Currently the European Union has raised fears of a repeat of the 2015 refugee crisis, with the entrance to Greece being on the frontline.

“The crisis in Afghanistan  has created possibilities for migrant flows,” Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said following a visit to the region of Evros.

“We cannot wait, passively, for the possible impact,. Our borders will remain safe and inviolable,” he said, explaining that the extension to the existing 12.5-kilometre fence had been completed in recent days, as well as a hi-tech, automated electronic monitoring system.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan have also discussed the Afghanistan events over the phone on Friday, with the latter saying that  both Afghanistan and Iran (an entry point from Afghanistan into Turkey) should be offered support from Europe to avoid an otherwise “inevitable” migrant crisis.
