The Aussie rules community is morning the loss of young star, Michael (Massa) Mascoulis, who died in a car accident last week.

The tragic death has seen tributes flow from friends, teammates and coaches, with many using social media to relay their grief.

Coming out of Victorian Aussie rules team Northern Knights, Mascoulis spent 2012 on the West Coast Eagles’ rookie list and played with West Perth this year.

Returning to Victoria, he signed at Port Melbourne three weeks ago and had started training with the team already.

Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said he felt for Mascoulis’ family.

“To see him at training on the Friday and then the next morning you find out he is no longer with us, it is just devastating,” Ayres said.

“It’s just really sad and you feel for his family who will obviously be going through a really trying time.”

The obituary pages are still filled with outpourings of grief, with his family charatersising the young player as having a “larger than life personality and a positive outlook”.

“Words can not express how much we loved and cherished our time together,” his family wrote.

“You were taken far too young a will forever be in our hearts.”

Former teammate and Freemantle player, Hayden Crozier described Mascoulis on twitter as “One of the most amazing people you would ever meet”.

The AFL commission also expressed their condolences to the family and say Mascoulis will be “remembered fondly by many friends at both West Coast and Port Melbourne.”

A facebook page set up in his honour has attracted more than 13,000 likes with many expressing their grief for the player’s sudden loss.
Mascoulis would have been getting ready to celebrate his twenty first birthday in January.
