The landslide victory of PASOK in Greece’s national election has resulted in a number of prominent members of the former Karamanlis government either not being re-elected or deciding to step aside.

Most notably the former Minister of Economy and Finance George Alogoskoufis did not manage to get re-elected and he announced that he would be retiring from politics.

Another New Democracy’s electoral rout claimed the scalp of Former Minister of Public Works and the Environment, George Souflias.

Although Mr Souflias was reelected as the leading New Democracy candidate on the national list of Deputies, he announced his immediate resignation from the Party and from Parliament.

His resignation was prompted by the strident criticism by party members for his role in persuading Mr Karamanlis to call the early elections.

Another noticeable absence will be that of the General Secreatry of New Democracy, Lefteris Zagoritis.

Despite his prominent organisational role in the party, Mr Zagoritis failed to secure sufficient votes to be elected.
