Formula 1 great Michael Schumacher’s condition remains so serious that doctors currently have no plans to wake him from an induced coma, fueling fears he may be in a coma for the rest of his life.

Schumacher is not progressing very well while he’s been in an artificially induced state of unconsciousness for 18 days, with medical specialists hoping a reduced supply of oxygen to the brain will help it recover from injuries sustained during a ski accident on December 29.

Neurosurgeon Andreas Zieger of the University Clinic for neurosurgery in Oldenburg, said there may be future complications and would not speculate whether the Formula 1 ace will ever fully recover or not recover at all.

The ski accident shocked Schumacher’s millions of fans, devastated his wife Corinna and their two teenage children. Schumacher dominated Formula 1 before retiring in 2012, winning seven world championships and recording 91 Grand Prix victories between 1994 and 2004.
