More than 30,000 people are expected to make their way to The Delphi Bank Semaphore Greek Cultural Festival, set to take place in Adelaide this weekend.

As organiser John Douvartzidis told AdelaideNow, a highlight of this year’s program is X-Factor Greece contestant Maria Stavropoulou.

Stavropoulou, originally from Sydney, travelled to Greece for the competition in 2009.

“She’s the premier Greek female singer in Australia. She has a massive following Australia-wide,” Mr Douvartzidis said.

Alongside Maria Stavropoulou, four live bands will provide live Greek music from 4.00 pm daily, with a range of traditional Greek dancing by local dance groups.

This year, the Semaphore Greek Festival will by hosted by TV presenter George Donikian.

For many festival-goers, the highlight of the festival will again be delicious Greek food – yiros, souvlakia, calamari, loukoumades and much more.

The festival, now in its 35th year, is run by 250 volunteers from the Greek Orthodox Community of Port Adelaide and is the church’s main fundraiser.

Events start at 11.00 am on Saturday and 10.00 am on Sunday, and run until midnight on both days. Entry is free.
