Cypriot tennis young gun, Petros Chrysochos has stunned in the Australian Open Juniors reaching the quarter finals but bested in the end.

The 17-year-old Larnaca born player made it into final 16 of the junior grand slam, after smashing Australian teen Omar Jasika 7-6 6-3, this week.

At a world ranking of 40, he’s exceeding his expectations, taking down Korea’s Chan-yeong Oh in the first round in two sets, beating Slovakia’s Alex Molcan after falling in the first set and breezing through the third round in just two sets.

Yet, in the quater final he was paired up with French youngster Quentin Haly, world number 7 in the juniors and a favourite to win.

The Frenchman didn’t put a foot wrong and managed to win the match in just two sets, 6-3 6-4.

Yet, for the Cypriot, his top 16 finish will see him well through the year, when he tries to up his ATP ranking and ferry himself through to the professional level.

Kyrgios is in the box seat to partner with Lleyton Hewitt in the singles, having made his Davis Cup debut against Poland when Australia won its way back into the world group.

The two teenagers will join Hewitt, his doubles player Chris Guccione and Jordan Thompson to make a team.
