Tourism in Greece, which accounts for about one-sixth of the economy, is set to reach a second consecutive record in 2014.
Andreas Andreadis, president of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises, speaking to Bloomberg stated that as many as 18.5 million tourists will visit
Greece this year, compared with 17.9 million in 2013, generating 13 billion euros in revenue.
The target of the tourism industry, according to Mr Andreadis, is for Greece to be able to accommodate 24 million visitors by 2021, adding in this way 9 percentage points in GDP while creating 300,000 new jobs. If this is to be achieved, the country needs to invest 3.3 billion euros per year, mainly in infrastructure.
Tourism accounted for 16.4 per cent of Greek gross domestic product in 2012, according to World Travel and Tourism Council figures.
