Presented by Assistant Professor Panagiotis Ioannou from the University of Crete, this illustrated lecture will trace the travels of the great painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos – “El Greco” – from his homeland of Crete to Venice, Rome and, ultimately, Toledo. The lecture will explore the ways each environment and culture affected the development of El Greco’s work.

How deep was the influence of the Post-Byzantine tradition on his art? How did he feel about the great Venetian masters of his day such as Titian and Veronese? How far was he integrated into the culture of Spain, where he spent half his life?

Professor Ioannou will investigate these issues while examining the contribution of El Greco’s travels to his artistic legacy.

This lecture marks the 400th anniversary of El Greco’s death in 1614.

Dr Panagiotis Ioannou is an Assistant Professor at the University of Crete. He has conducted original research on El Greco, as well as on the Greek-Neopolitan painter Belisario Corenzio, the subject of his PhD thesis.
