Greek Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios pulled off a massive upset as he beat world number one Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon today.

The 19-year-old wildcard from Canberra won the fourth round content by three sets to one, winning 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 6-3.

The 144th-ranked Kyrgios hit 37 aces as he became the first player outside the top 100 to beat the world number one since 1992.

He is also the first teenager to beat a world number one seed in a Grand Slam since Nadal, then 19, beat Roger Federer in 2005.

After the game, Canberra-born Kyrgios – who said he wants to be the world number one – said he had been determined to win after hearing his mother Norlaila tell the Australian media that Nadal was ‘too good’ for her son.

“I saw an interview with her saying he was too good, so that made me a bit angry and that helped,” Kyrgios joked.

Kyrgios will now head into a quarter-final match against Canadian Montenegrin Milos Raonic, in what will be his first appearance in a last eight at a grand slam.
