After its successful run as a stage play, a film adaptation of Alex and Eve entered the editing stage as its shooting finished in western Sydney’s suburbs early this month.

The cross-cultural comedy, based on the hit stage play by Alex Lykos, follows Alex, a Greek Orthodox man who falls in love with Eve, a Lebanese woman.

However, Alex is expected to marry a good Greek girl, whilst Eve is arranged to marry a Lebanese man, and the pair attempt to stop themselves falling in love.

Through the relationship of Alex and Eva, the romantic comedy explores the themes of love, race and religion.

Chosen as two of the locations to film the new Australian romantic comedy were the Sydney suburbs of Lakemba and Canterbury.

Producer Murray Fahey told The Express it was important to film in an area that depicts what living in the inner west of Sydney is like.

“When you see something on the big screen it has to ring of authenticity and that is what we are doing by filming in these areas,” he said.

“We wanted to give it a real inner-west multicultural feel so we have filmed in Homebush, Lidcombe, Lakemba, Burwood, Strathfield and Canterbury.”

Mr Fahey said that the crew has received great assistance from Canterbury Council as well as from the local businesses – who were happy to provide the set with things like Greek cakes or Lebanese sweets.

The film has cast Andrea Demetriades, who starred in the ABC legal series Crownies, and its recent spin-off Janet King, as Eve and Richard Brancatisano as Alex. Zoe Carides will play Alex’s mother, with Tony Nikolakopoulos in the role of George Karrastopoulos, the Greek dad.

The story – adapted for the screen by Alex Lykos, who also penned the stage production – explores questions of love, race and religion in a humorous way.

The film is directed by the experienced Peter Andrikidis, whose recent resume of television work includes Janet King, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Underbelly, Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms and others.
