The wait is finally over. The documentary A Family Affair, based on the famous Xylouris family, is set to premiere in Australia on Sunday 1 March in Melbourne and Sydney.

Directed by Angeliki Aristomenopoulou, the much-anticipated film uses authentic footage that follows three generations of the Cretan family on their musical journey from Crete to Australia as they perform to their fans across the globe.

“Gradually, the Xylouris clan accepted me into their world, and allowed me to observe the intimate moments of their lives. I have become fascinated by their unique bond to music, which connects them both to the land they come from and to each other,” Angeliki told Neos Kosmos reporter Maja Jovic in 2013.

Filmed on location in both Australia and abroad, Aristomenopoulou explores the family’s history and the way music has always been at the core of their separation and reunification. The product of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the film was made possible through the support of ABC TV Australia, the Greek Film Centre, OTE-TV, and Greek public broadcaster NERIT.

The film’s first premiere was in Greece in January, which then followed with the documentary being released in Crete and Thessaloniki. Its European release saw it featured in France at FIPA-International Festival of Audiovisual Programs, Biarritz, and will be released in the US shortly.

The film’s Australian premiere in Melbourne will also celebrate the film’s Cretan background, with restaurant Philhellene catering the event before the screening.
