Underworld construction identity George Alex has been sentenced to 16 months community service for “extremely violent” death threats to his former lover.

Described as “disgraceful, obscene and disgusting”, Magistrate Chris O’Brien said he had no doubt that the content of the messages caused Alex’s former girlfriend Anna Lee excessive fear, and would have contributed to her fleeing overseas.

After the couple’s 12-month relationship ended in April last year, Alex had sent a series of threatening emails and text messages to Ms Lee, calling her a “very filthy girl” and saying she didn’t deserve anyone that made her feel happy.

The threats extended to her parents, with Alex saying Ms Lee is lucky he didn’t send “his men” to her father’s office to collect all the money he spent on Ms Lee.

“U (sic) tell the prostitute if she ever comes back she will get hurt,” he wrote to Ms Lee’s mother.

Magistrate Chris O’Brien said the threats were “disturbing both in their content and in their tone”, but took into account Alex’s undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
Avoiding jail, Alex will be serving an intensive corrections order (ICO) in the community for 16 months.

Alex was also investigated in a royal commission into union corruption, where he was accused of offering bribes to Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union officials.
