The National Union of Greek Australian Students (NUGAS) have elected a new national council, following their annual general meeting in Queensland. Harry Mavrolefteros from New South Wales has replaced Elinah Ioannides as the national president whilst Regi Karantzas, from Victoria is the new secretary.

The rest of the council is as follows:

Treasurer – Michael Christodoulides, NSW

Australian Liaison Officer – Mary Kousvos, SA

International Liaison Officer – Gregory Vetsikas, NSW

Education Officer – Kerry Matthews, VIC

Policy Officer – Ioannis Natsioulas, VIC

Media Officer – Lex Georgiou, QLD

Webmaster – Alexi Andronis, WA

Activities Officer – Dimitri Nicola, QLD

The new council will have a 6 month term rather than 18 months as the prior elected council had.

“We thought a 6 month term would be best so that we can get into the original plan of having an AGM in August,” said media officer, Lex Georgiou.

]“In this time we aim to get back in touch with all our affiliate university clubs and societies and increase communication between the different levels.”

The 21-year-old town planning and construction student said that each officer has set a specific goal that they plan to achieve before the end of the term.

One goals includes the creation of a monthly newsletter for NUGAS members and Greek communities around Australia. “That way students say from Melbourne will know about events that are happening in Perth and will be able to attend if they want to,” said Ms Georgiou.

Liason Officer, Mary Kousvos is currently contacting university society presidents and state NUGAS administrative co-coordinators, whilst Activities Officer Dimitri Nicola is in talks with university clubs nationally to keep a tab on planned events.

Ms Georgiou said that the council’s greatest challenge will be to achieve their goals within the short term period.
