The 2014 film Xenia by Panos Koutras has been selected to enter the nomination process for Best Foreign Language Film category for the 88th Academy Awards.

Koutras’ film has made it into the first round of selection for Oscar nominations, after a very successful trajectory in cinemas worldwide.

The final nominees for all categories will be announced on 14 January 2016, with the 88th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled to take place on 28 February 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, Xenia is scheduled to be screened in theatres throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.

Having won awards in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Croatia and Mexico, Xenia was chosen by the Greek Culture Ministry’s committee at the recommendation of the caretaker Alt. Culture Minister Marina Lampraki-Plaka.
The selection couldn’t have been more timely, as the migrant protagonists’ goal is to ensure their Greek citizenship.
Greece has never won an Oscar but let’s see if the two teen brothers crossing the country to find their Greek father after their Albanian mother has died will find their way.

Xenia previously competed in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival as well as in the Contemporary World Cinema category of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film’s stars are: Kostas Nikouli, Nikos Gelia, Romanna Lobats, Aggelos Papadimitriou, Yannis Stankoglou and Marissa Triantafyllidou.
