Socceroo Craig Moore has ended his spell at Kavala to return home where he will try to secure a place in Australia’s World Cup squad.

Moore decided that since Kavala are out of the Greek Cup and cannot compete for a European place through the league, that it would be best to return to Australia to get some rest and then find another team to train with.

Kavala are sixth in the Super League on 38 points but are eight points behind Aris in fifth and cannot qualify for the Europa League.

“There’s two games left in the season and really they were dead rubbers with no chance of qualifying for Europe,” Moore told Fox Sport on Thursday.

“I played the last 15 games on the bounce in a two-month spell and basically my body was at a stage that I felt I needed a rest.

“I had to get back to Australia and get some body maintenance to freshen up for the World Cup.”

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has warned his players they would need to be fit and playing regularly to be considered but having left Brisbane Roar for Kavala in January, Moore cannot register for a third club inside a 12-month period.

Moore said he consulted Kavala coach Aad de Mos about his decision to leave Greece.

“I played a lot of games. I’m not 24 any more. I’m 34. The last two or three games were tough going and I was starting to get to the stage where physically I felt as if I needed the rest,” Moore said.

“I’m going to be in continual contact with Pim Verbeek because now I’ll look for another option as far as getting myself into training towards the end of April.”
